Three years prior to this contest, Elijah announced that God would withhold rain for a period of three years (1 Kings 17:1). This would have been a blow to Baal worshipers, as they believed their god caused rain. When the contest was over, Elijah prayed and a heavy rain poured from the sky (17:41-46; cf. James 5:17-18).
